John Weinrich Artists’ Cabin

This week we are hiking into the beautiful Wesley Hill Nature Preserve and also kayaking the  Honeoye Inlet.  Please choose one and follow those directions.  Each event will start at a different location and different times.

Honeoye Inlet


WESLEY HILL HIKERS – 4:00 PM We will meet at the Preserve parking lot on Wesley Hill Rd.  This is a land preserve covering 359 acres, owned by Finger Lakes Trust.  The trails traverse old-growth forests, fields, wetlands, streams, ponds, and deep gorges.  Its an oasis of beauty.

CLIMBERS(led by Charlotte) will follow the yellow trail, right on blue trail to yellow trail past overlook and cabin, red trail over creek to green trail (right), back on green trail to red trail to Anna’s Pond, red trail back to yellow and parking lot.  (6 miles)

Wesley-MapTOURISTS (led by Amy) will follow the yellow trail keeping left at all turns, to red trail to Anna’s Pond continue on red to green (right)  and again right on red trail back to creek crossing, yellow trail back to parking lot. (4.5 miles)

NATURALISTS(led by Gene) will follow yellow trail to the left and to the right at the fork to overlook and cabin, continue on yellow-red to Anna’s Pond.  Turn around any time in an hour’s time back to parking lot. (3 miles)
Directions:
From Honeoye (upper route) – Take 20A to East Lake Rd.  Follow East Lake Rd. south for a short distance and then turn left on County Rd 33.  Continue a short distance and turn right Pinewood Hill Rd.  Follow Pinewood Hill Rd. then Gulick Road south turning right on Wesley Hill Rd. (3.9 miles)  Follow road to parking lot. (1 mile)
From Honeoye(lower route) – Take 20A to East Lake Rd, go south 4.3 miles to Wesley Hill Rd. on left.  Use lower gear on seasonal road for (.08 miles) to parking lot.
From Naples – Take County Rd 36 south end to East Lake Rd.  go north 5.3 miles to Wesley Hill Rd on right.  Use lower gear on seasonal road for (.08 miles) to parking lot.
Optional after-hike-kayak social will be at Amy Klein”s home on Honeoye Lake.  Maps will be available after the hike.  Please bring a dish to pass and your beverage or make a donation.Honeoye

 HONEOYE INLET KAYAKERS – 3:45 PM

We will meet at Ralph’s home in Dana Shore’s.  We are all launching from Ralph’s shore to paddle thru the meandering Honeoye Inlet.  Watch for blue and green heron, turtles sunning themselves, Kingfisher, snakes and ,of course, the famous Honeoye swan.Swan

We will have 3 leaders (Nanette, Pam and Ralph) Everyone can stay with the group leader that fits their speed.  We will all take the same route, but not all will reach the bridge.  Just turn back at 5:15 pm. Check out the picture of the bridge.Honeoye inlet bridge

From Honeoye – Take 20 A to East Lake Rd going south 4.5 miles to Dana Shores.  Follow signs to Ralph home.
From Naples – Take County Rd 36 going north to East Lake Rd.  5.3 miles to Dana Shores.  Follow signs to Ralph home. 
Optional after hike-kayaking social will be held at Amy Klein;s home on Honeoye Lake.  Maps will be available after kayaking.  Please bring a dish to pass and your beverage or make a donation.
 
 
 

 

WESLEY HILL NATURE PRESERVE – NOVEMBER 17, 2013, 2:00 PM

 

021This week we will venture into the Wesley Hill Nature Preserve which was founded in 1999 by the generous donation of 90 acres by the children of three artists-John Weinrich, James Havens and Colburn Dugan- to the Finger Lakes Land Trust.  Since that time the preserve has grown to over 359 acres. This property offers Briggs Gully, the original Weinrich cabin, breathtaking views of surrounding hills, a pond and extensive forest.

024We will all meet at the Preserve parking lot, on the west side of Gulick Rd at 2:00 pm.  IF SNOW BECOMES A PROBLEM THAT DAY, WE WILL PARK AT THE PLAZA IN HONEOYE IN FRONT OF JAVA MAMA (MAIN STREET/RT 20A)

PLEASE ONLY use the Gulick Road parking area,(Wesley Road  parking area is only available for Bow hunters and we won’t be there!). If you park on the road, please be careful parking and getting out of your car – watch for the edge of the road and for other traffic.

Wesley Hill Nature PreserveCLIMBERS, (led by Marty) will follow the red trail by the pond to the orange trail, take a short jog on the yellow and then back to red.  We will follow the red trail to the green intersection and take the green trail down to the gully and back to the red trail and then to parking lot.  About 4 miles.  (WEATHER PERMITTING)

TOURISTS, (led by Amy) will follow the red trail  past the pond to the cabin, across the creek and staying on the red trail back to the parking lot. (WEATHER PERMITTING)

NATURALISTS, (led by Nanette) will follow the red trail past the pond to the cabin, across the creek and then follow the red trail back to green trail and to the parking lot. (WEATHER PERMITTING)

Optional after-hike social will be held at Amy Klein’s home on Honeoye Lake.  Maps will be available after the hike.  Please bring a dish to pass and your beverage or make a donation.

If weather is wintery, please wear appropriate footwear and walking sticks.  The terrain is slopes and gullies.

From Honeoye, take Rt. 20A east to East Lake Road. Follow East Lake Rd. south for a short distance and then turn left on County Rd. 33. Continue a short distance and turn right Pinewood Hill Rd. Follow Pinewood Hill, then Gulick Road south toward Cumming Nature Center, for a total of 6.4 miles to preserve entrance, on right.
