The Great Allegheny Passage and the C&O Towpath

Linda and I got back from our bike trip (165 miles total) as the hiking group explored the Bristol branch of the FLT.

The bikers

Here is our self portrait before we started in Connellsville, PA

We rode from Connellsville, PA to Cumberland MD on an old railroad bed that they have converted into a bike and hike trail.  First, the website is fantastic and well worth exploring.  But the trail was even more fun, and best of all were the B&Bs where we stayed.

At Cumberland, we picked up the C&O Canal towpath.  This was quite a bit muddier, but it was fun to see the old canal and locks.

Just one more picture.  Before riding, we stopped at a Frank Lloyd Wright house called Falling Waters.  It was so great to see right after watching the documentary on the Boynton House here in Rochester.  It is highly recommended that you spend a few hours if you are in the area of Ohiopyle, PA.

Ontario Park and the Bristol Branch of the Finger Lakes Trail

On Sunday, September 30, the Springwater Trails hiking group walked the FLT from Ontario Park to W Hollow Rd. As recalled by Pam, the most outstanding part of the Bristol Branch trail was the huge beaver pond towards Rt. 33 coming down from the park.  The entire pond was made by the beavers damming up the creek. They had their lodge in the middle.  It was beautiful, and it was nice that at this time it wasn’t pouring.  Pam and Gene stopped to identify several mushrooms along the trail.

Our education blog

Welcome to the Springwater Trails “education” blog.  This blog will be used for various reports we hope will be of interest to the members and friends of Springwater Trails.

The mission of our organization is:

To create, identify, protect and promote hiking trails in the Springwater area. To increase awareness and enjoyment of Springwater’s unique geographical features, natural resources and open spaces by residents and visitors to the area.

Maybe this blog will be our small way to increase awareness of the wonder to be found in Springwater.

Welcome

As you probably have noticed, Springwater Trails is experimenting with using WordPress for our website.

We are trying to improve our communications with the members of the Springwater Trails.  This is this first post I am writing as President of Springwater Trails, so please bear with me as I learn the ropes.

See you all on Sunday at the next hike!
