Our Sunday, July 15, 2012 hike/kayak/canoe adventure will be held at the Conesus Inlet at 4:00PM. Kayakers and Canoeists will paddle the Conesus Lake Inlet/Southern Conesus Lake area and hikers will wander through the DEC Conesus Inlet and explore the
McMillian Creeks that enter the south end of Conesus Lake from the east. This area is in one of Livingston County’s important historical sites (there is a link to the Sullivan Campaign of 1779) and also a valuable wetland area for spawning fish, waterfowl, eagles, and amphibians. The McMillian Creek’s (north and south) geological history dates back to the Upper Devonian and the area is known for it’s Native American History and Sullivan Campaign.
Kayakers and Canoeists will meet at the South Boat Launch just off Rt. 256 in Groveland at 3:30 for a launch at 4:00. This DEC area feeds into the Conesus inlet creek and out into the South end of Conesus Lake. (it does not feed into the large wetland area). Conesus Lake is densely populated and boaters should be alert.
1. Everyone should have a certified personal flotation device, also known as a PFD.
2. Bring drinking water and some snack for energy.
3. If you wears glasses, please invest in some straps (“Croakies” for example) so you don’t lose them over the side.
4. If it rains we will continue to paddle. If there is lightening overhead, we’ll pull out of the water as expediently possible and wait out the storm.
5. Bring a towel. If you have a dry bag, bring it and keep your towel in it.
Bob Cox will lead the boaters and will have a first aid kit on board and carry other safety gear on his kayak.
Hikers will meet at the DEC Conesus Inlet area off Sliker Hill Road at 4:00 sharp. Naturalists will tour
the wetland area, take time for photographs and nature study. Only Tourists and Climbers will begin a creek walk adventure
up the North McMillian Creek bordering Henderson Hill Road. Please note this creek hike is for intermediate and advanced hikers only as the creeks can be slippy and hill climbing into a gully area can be steep. Be prepared with bug spray and waterproof shoes.
After Hike Social will be at the Beachcomber on Conesus Lake at 6:30.
