Creek hike @ Conklin Creek at High Tor
Jul 12 @ 9:50 am – 2:00 pm

Take a hike up the creek

Victor Hiking Trails will lead a creek walk on Saturday, July 12th up and down Conklin Creek, located in the High Tor Wildlife Management Area, near the village of Naples. This is not an easy hike and it is not recommended for small children.

You will be walking in the creek, so bring your water shoes, a bag lunch and something to drink. You may also want to bring dry socks and hiking boots if the group decides to hike other areas of the park.

Meet at Victor Town Hall rear parking lot, 85 East Main Street, at 9:00 a.m. to car pool to the trailhead. Or meet the group at the parking lot on Rt. 245, just west of Parish Hill Road, at 9:50 a.m. The group will return to Victor around 3:00 p.m. Additional information is available at  585-234-8226  or www.victorhikingtrails.org.

VHT hike – Monkey Run Trails & MF Bluebird Haven @ Monkey Run Trails & MF Bluebird Haven
Nov 8 @ 9:00 am – 11:00 am

On Saturday November 8, 2014, Victor Hiking Trails (VHT) will lead a hike at MaryFrances Bluebird Haven Park and Monkey Run Trails. The hike will start at the “Butler Cottage”, 235 Victor-Egypt Road (County Road 9) at 9:00 a.m. There is a large parking area by the house, set back from the road. The hike will be around the 40-acre park and is about one mile of easy walking through meadow and woods. The group will then walk over to Monkey Run Trails for about 2 miles of easy walking through woods. Wear good walking shoes, bring something to drink and a snack.

Map.

Note that for this “local hike” in Victor, VHT will NOT meet at the Victor Town Hall at 9:00AM as is usually the case for monthly VHT hikes, but instead will met directly at MaryFrances Bluebird Haven Park at 9:00 a.m.

Also Note: Bluebirds will likely have already left the area with the change of season/weather.

This is a hike that eventually Springwater Trails (S/T) will have on our hike calendar, just not sure when.  If you want to get a jump on hiking this area, join VHT for this autumn hike.  Check the VHT website for details/changes/etc.

FYI – This hike is the VHT monthly hike for October. As a norm VHT leads one hike per month on the 2nd Saturday of each month, at varying locations; no need to be a member of VHT to attend VHT hikes. Some of the VHT hike locales in 2014 were in the “home range” of Springwater Trails (some in the Naples area).  The Saturday Dec 13,2014 VHT hike will be held at Dryer Rd Park & Fort Hill in Victor, a locale which Springwater Trails hiked Oct 21,2012 as some S/T hikers no doubt recall as the “Ganondagan hike”.  The VHT December hike lends a varied opportunity for S/T hikers to join a VHT hike at this locale and this time without colorful leaves that we enjoyed on 10/21/2012.

Harriet Hollister @ Harriet Hollister Spencer Park
Mar 14 @ 9:45 am – 12:15 pm

On Saturday, March 14th, Victor Hiking Trails will lead a hike on the trails at Harriet Hollister Spencer State Recreation Area. They have created additional trails, so plan on spending 2—3 hours on the trails. If the snow doesn’t all melt by then, bring your cross-country skis or snowshoes. Because of the high elevation and wonderfully groomed trails, the snow will likely be there until June. Bring a bag lunch and something to drink. Meet in the rear parking lot of Victor Town Hall, 85 East Main Street at 9:00 a.m. You can also meet at the park at 9:45 a.m.

Fishers Park, a VHT hike on Sat 4/11/2015 @ Fishers Park
Apr 11 @ 9:00 am – 11:00 am

Here is a Spring (multiple entendre intended) opportunity to join Victor Hiking Trails (VHT) for a hike in Fishers Park.  Many S/T hikers may recall an Autumn Springwater Trails hike at Fishers Park planned and led for S/T by Douglas.  The date was November 16th, 2014 and S/T hikers were greeted at the start of the hike by Dave Wright, Chairman of VHT.

Well, about five months later, on Saturday April 11th, 2015, Dave Wright will again be greeting a group of hikers at the start of a hike in Fishers Park, albeit this time he will be leading the group of hikers on a VHT guided hike.  All hikers are free to join in this hike, no membership or fees are required.

Perhaps you will find a different world in the trails of Spring vs Autumn.  Traction Devices (TDs) are recommended for this hike and other hikes at this time of year.   A possible alternative to TDs may be deep tread sole footwear.  Since it may be muddy this early in Spring Season, consider waterproof footwear, and perhaps gaiters.

For more details on the hike you can check the VHT website , or telephone (585)-234-8226 (234 is a Rochester telephone exchange) for details.

VHT hike at Robert H Treman Park @ Robert H Treman Park
Jul 11 @ 8:00 am – 4:30 pm

Victor Hiking Trails (VHT) will be leading a hike at Robert H Treman Park, near the Ithaca area, on Saturday July 11th, 2015. This hike is part of the monthly guided hike series of VHT.  (***** Please note!! – accept apologies for any inconvenience if you saw this hike initially listed as Fri 7/10/2015, there had been a planned campout for Friday with the hike on Saturday, but the campout had to be cancelled.  The hike for Saturday is still ON.******)

Carpool will form behind Victor Town Hall, located at 60 East Main Street in Victor,NY (GPS = 42.9821448,-77.4087837 ), with intended leave time of 8:00AM on SATURDAY July 11th, 2015.

This hike locale of Robert H Treman Park is one that would be a bit far for Springwater Trails (S/T) to put on the S/T hiking schedule.  So if you wanna enjoy this park in the summertime with a group of hikers similar minded to the S/T hiking group, this hike may be for you.  Many waterfalls in Enfield Glen are a highlight of this park

Time guesstimates:  Carpool at Victor 8:00AM ; At Robert H Treman Park ~ 10:00AM ; Hike ~3-4 hours ; Back in Victor at Town Hall ~4:30PM.

For further details/updates about this hike, check the VHT website.  If you wish to meet the VHT group at Robert H Treman Park (rather than carpooling from Victor), you will need to coordinate a meet locale thru VHT hike leaders.

7/9/2015 update: Thoughts for your hiking comfort in shifting gears from our recent rainy grey skies to Saturdays predicted warmth and high sunshine angles. Checklist: Hat with a visor or brim that will stay on in windy conditions, and not end up in the glen. Sunglasses to cut reflection off the water and from overhead sunrays, again that will stay on. Light highly breathable clothing for sun reflection to prevent sunburn.  Sunscreen on uncovered areas including you face.

VHT hike at Bare Hill SUA
Sep 5 @ 6:15 pm

— Please note that Saturday, September 5th, 2015 is Labor Day holiday weekend. —

Perhaps you have an interest in hiking the Bare Hill State Unique Area (SUA), as Springwater Trails has not yet hiked this area.  And perhaps you have an interest in the annual Bare Hill Ceremonial Fire.  Well, if either be the case, you have an option to hike with Victor Hiking Trails (VHT) at Bare Hill SUA on Saturday, Sept 5th, 2015 in the evening. This evening hike starts during daylight hours, and will finish after dark!

⇒ Hike Meet Time and Locale:  Approximately 6:15-6:30PM at the cul-de-sac (deadend) of Van Epps Rd (which is very near the Bare Hill trailhead).

Arrangements of a VHT arranged carpool, are:   VHT designated Carpool will form behind Victor Town Hall, located at 85 East Main Street in Victor,NY (GPS = 42.9821448,-77.4087837 ), with intended leave time of 5:30PM on Saturday 9/5/2015.  PLEASE NOTE, THE 5:30PM TIME IS FOR THE CARPOOL IN VICTOR!!  THERE IS AN ETA OF 6:15PM-6:30PM AT THE VAN EPPS RD CUL-DE-SAC PARKING AREA. (The cul-de-sac is adjacent the gated haul road and trailhead that lead to the top of Bare Hill).  Please note, further down in this hike event announcement are carpool arrangements for Springwater & Naples environs S/T area hikers.

Part parcel of this hike event is supper, ceremonial festivities including viewing lighting of the annual Bare Hill Ceremonial Fire, and viewing of the annual Canandaigua Lake Ring of Fire.

Lay of the land:  Bare Hill, lands publicly owned and held as a NYSDEC State Unique Area (in the nw quadrant of the Town of Middlesex, Yates County), is situate off the eastern side of Canandaigua Lake (about 2/3rds down the distance of the lake from the northern end), and is situate high atop a hill between the lake and NYS Rt 364. Note – because much of the hills’ elevation is reached when driving uphill on roads to reach the trailhead, the trails themselves do not have any steep ascent/decent but are gradual in elevation change and hold relatively little elevation gain/loss.

⇒ Hike Routing and Groups: More adventurous hikers (suitable for S/T Climbers) on this guided hike will hike to Bare Hill via a herd trail (as some would say “rough it”), while the more tame routing (suitable for S/T Naturalists) will be on the haul road which is essentially an old farm road.  Many years ago Bare Hill was farmed as pasture lands.  Hike distance is suitable for S/T Naturalists.   The return hike off Bare Hill will be after sunset, so BRING A FLASHLIGHT OR HEADLAMP for this part of the hike.

Supper and other details:  What’s for supper while on Bare Hill? is up to the individuals who show up.  Bring what you like, and if you wish to bring enough for sharing that’s fine too.  Don’t forget a beverage, and bring something to sit on as this is a gathering (not just a hike).  There are no picnic tables or facilities of any type here.  Bare in mind (pun intended) this is a VHT planned hike, not a S/T planned hike, so some facets may be a bit different than S/T hikers are used to.   ΟΟ Roll with it, please. ΟO

Of note, a Labor Day weekend Saturday evening Ring of Fire hike on Bare Hill has been on a “hike to do list” for S/T for well over 1-2 years, and being that one of our sister hiking groups facilitated the planning of a hike much as was envisioned for S/T, “seize the opportunity” to join for this hike seemed to be a logical thing to do.

Please consult the VHT website for further details and updates, and/or check the VHT message line for updates (585)-234-8226.

All are welcome to hike with VHT (with no VHT membership required and with no fee, much the same as S/T hikes are set-up). Should you and any other S/T hikers decide to join VHT for this hike and as result gain some expertise in the area, perhaps in the future you could lead a S/T hike at Bare Hill.  Something to consider for sharing with fellow  hikers.  In fact three S/T hikers already have hiked Bare Hill with an eye toward a future S/T hike here.

What vista views will I see while on Bare Hill, you ask?  Well, from the summit of Bare Hill looking directly across the lake (westward), lakeside for the south to the north will be Hicks Point, Seneca Point, Bristol Harbour Marina and Resort.  And higher up from the shoreline directly across the lake, the ridge you will be looking at is the east side of Stid Hill (approximately the northern area of the southern NYS DEC Stid Hill parcel) .  You will see part of one or more of: Hicks Rd, NYS Rt 21, Bills Rd, Stid Hill Rd.    No, you can not see Bristol Mountain Ski Resort even though it is on a westerly line from Bare Hill, because it is on the next hill to the west of Stid Hill and thus is out of view.  (But, maybe at night in season when Bristol Mtn Ski Resort is ablaze with lights you might see the glow of the lights.)  One other view from a trail on Bare Hill a distance away from the summit affords a view looking to the northwest diagonally across Canandaigua Lake. This one is left totally up to you to identify landmarks, albeit one note – possibility that in the distance you may be able to see Fort Hill in Victor near Ganondagan (distance viewing oculars of some variety will be helpful for this one).

—————————————————————————————————————-

⇒ Driving Directions:   For those who wish to drive directly to the trailhead of Bare Hill SUA, and not carpool in either the VHT or S/T arranged carpools :  The trailhead is directly adjacent the cul-de-sac of Van Epps Road.  The cul-de-sac is utilized as a parking area.  Given sufficient number of vehicles that may converge on the area for a hike to the “ceremonial fire event” some parking may also be necessitated along the shoulder of Van Epps Rd.

Van Epps Rd runs west off Bare Hill Rd.  Bare Hill Rd can be accessed via Town Line Rd at the northern end, and via Co Rd 10 (aka N Vine Valley Rd) at the southern end.   Both these roads run westerly off NYS Rt 364.   {In reaching Bare Hill expect most roadways to be paved, but expect gravel surface (dirt road) on Van Van Epps Rd.}

For those drivers who do not do well with compass directions for routing and turns:   From the north (Canandaigua & environs) on NYS RT 364 as you are heading southbound, turn R onto Townline Rd, turn L onto Bare Hill Rd, & turn R onto Van Epps Rd.   From Springwater area.  S on 15 to Wayland, N on 21 thru Naples. R on 245 to Middlesex, L on 364.  On NYS RT 364 as you are heading northbound, turn L onto Co Rd 10 (aka N Vine Valley Rd).  Be careful not to make this left on S. Vine Valley Rd., which comes first. Turn R onto Bare Hill Rd, & turn L onto Van Epps Rd.   >>>The trailhead parking area is at the cul-de-sac (deadend) of Van Epps Rd.

{For edifice history appreciators, and as point of reference, the historic red brick one room schoolhouse “Overakers Corners Schoolhouse”, located in the Town of Middlesex, Yates County, is situate on the NW corner of NYS Rt 364 & Co Rd 10 (aka N Vine Valley Rd). The schoolhouse has now been restored for utilization as a heritage museum, albeit admission dates and times are very limited.}

⇒ Carpool arrangements for Springwater & Naples environs, as arranged by S/T hiking folks:  This is a progressive carpool, Wayland carpoolers will stop at Naples carpool locale to coalesce a larger carpool and then ultimately head to Bare Hill.

Wayland – Large parking lot behind fire station.  From Springwater, R at light in Wayland.  Entrance is on right, right after 7-11.  Departure time 5 PM.

Naples – Parking lot behind Bob and Ruth’s, N of town.  Departure time 5:30 PM.  Meet and join hikers from Victor at Bare Hill lot.  We’ll probably arrive there before them because if we arrive after, they won’t wait for us.

(Directional Travel Note: It is not difficult to lose your trail of bread crumbs in this remote hilly & windy road area off NYS Rt 364.  So a suggestion, … pay attention to directions and turns, and keep conversing in the vehicle to a minimum once you have turned off NYS Rt 364 and start the hilly and sometimes winding ascent, and be aware there are “blind areas” that come up quickly as result of hills in the road.  The same advice goes for the return trip out to NYS Rt 364.  Note: There really are not many wrong turns that you can make before eventually getting back to NYS Rt 364, so do not fret too much about losing your way, but paying attention when driving in this area definitely can cut down on uncertainty, as can keeping your speed down to increase time for reaction to road changes.  A detailed map of the area and a good (human) navigator is helpful, as well.

GPS Coords:  Van Epps Rd cul-de-sac parking area: Lat/Long coordinates are: 42.746746, -77.302622  This is in the nw quadrant of the Town of Middlesex, Yates County.  ( It is possible if using a GPS unit for directions, you may not want to blindly follow the GPS unit.  You should have some semblance of where you are going, in case your GPS Unit is “confused” in this area (“confused” is to be read as “possibly unreliable in this area”.  Thus, this GPS directional aid section is placed nearly at the bottom of this hike event announcement.)

√ Hike Checklist:  beverage, supper, something to sit on, flashlight, warmer clothing to don after sunset, perhaps distance viewing oculars, perhaps a map to determine what you are looking at in the vistas, perhaps a backpack to carry the aforementioned items.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[ Also of note – other upcoming VHT hikes of interest to some area hikers:  Saturday, October 10th, 2015 (Columbus Day holiday weekend) is a VHT hike at Keuka Lake Outlet Trail (Penn Yan to Dresden).  Saturday November 14, 2015 is a VHT hike at Boughton Park (this one is figuratively if not literally in VHT’s “back yard”); and Saturday, December 12, 2015  is a VHT hike at Ontario County Park’s new north trails (this one in S/T home range).  All three of these hikes meet for carpool at 9:00AM Saturday morning at Victor Town Hall (rear) parking lot.    VHT Message Line , phone (585)-234-8226 includes info about the next upcoming VHT hike.  note: 234 phone number exchange is a Rochester area exchange. ]
VHT hike at BHB-FLT in Prattsburgh
Oct 10 @ 9:00 am
Please note that Saturday, October 10th, 2015 is Columbus Day holiday weekend.
  • UPDATE: Change in plans for a second year in a row.  Since the Keuka Lake Outlet Trail is in need or reparations due to flooding, VHT has changed plans and will not lead an October hike there this year.  Instead, the October VHT guided hike will be on the BHB-FLT in Prattsburgh.  Meet at Victor Town Hall at 9AM, or at the trail in Prattsburg at 10AM.  For more info consult the VHT website.
Carpool will form behind Victor Town Hall, located at 60 East Main Street in Victor,NY (GPS = 42.9821448,-77.4087837 ), with intended leave time of 9:00AM on Saturday 10/10/2015.
VHT, in The Pathfinder Fall 2015 edition newsletter on page 4, provided the following info for meeting in Prattsburgh:   VHT will be hiking the south end of this section of trail. Fall colors should be near peak. Expect some hilly terrain with plenty of rest stops for water. Looking at 7 to 8 miles of hiking. If you are coming from the south  (or elsewhere in the area), you can meet the group in Prattsburg on Route 53, in front of the Prattsburg Market Place, 2 S. Main St, Prattsburgh, NY 14873 at 10 A.M.. We should return to Victor between 3:30 and 4:30 P.M. Please consult the VHT website for further details and updates.
Some S/T hikers may want to take this opportunity to hike and learn about this southern section of the BHB-FLT with a group of hikers like-minded to S/T.
Previously scheduled but now cancelled – Perhaps you have an interest in hiking the Keuka Lake Outlet Trail, but that may be seen as a bit far for S/T to plan a hike.  Well, here is a VHT hike on the Keuka Lake Outlet Trail, on Oct 10th, 2015.
(This Keuka Lake Outlet Trail hike had been scheduled for 2014, but had to be cancelled because parts of the trail washed out, due to the May 2014 severe rainstorm with torrents of rain in the Keuka Lake area causing floods.)
Also of note, Saturday November 14, 2015 is a VHT Boughton Park hike (this one is in VHT home range); and Saturday, December 12, 2015  is a VHT hike at Ontario County Park’s new north trails    VHT Message Line , phone (585)-234-8226 includes info about the next hike.
⇒ Program at 2PM  on Oct 18th is an approximately one hour presentation about the third floor of the “1876 Opera Block”, located at 23 Genesee St in Avon NY.  The free program is a presentation of the Avon Preservation and Historical Society (APHS) with Kelly Cole presenting, and will be held in the 2nd floor meeting room of the 1876 Opera Block.  Following the APHS presentation, all will have opportunity to tour the 3rd floor of the 1876 Opera Block as it exists at present, with the original stage still intact that played host to various forms of entertainment and so much more, serving as a multi-purpose community gathering venue.  The building is handicapped accessible and has elevator access to all floors.
For those interested:
    • A book titled: “History Restored: The Avon Opera Block”, by Debbie Morrow, 2010  – Originally priced at $30.00  ~ NOW ON SALE! for $15.00 ~  will be offered at $10.00 price at the APHS program presentation on October 18, 2015.
Historical note: “Opera Houses”  (not to be confused with Grand Opera Houses) often were built in rural areas of the USA, many built in the 19th century (from the 1860s on), became popular community gathering places utilized for purpose of entertainment (complete with a stage), yep, theatrical performances, Vaudeville, minstrel shows, traveling Opera, and more, dances, lectures, political meetings, and school graduations & such; and most were considered places relatively accessible to rural sparsely populated locales far from city centers of population yet closer to small rural communities. Some were built in combination as a civic or government building.  Most often an Opera House of rural America would be located in a community with proximity to railroad service which was a leading transportation mode of the time when Opera Houses were in vogue and most utilized.  Some Opera Houses still exist today, and some are still vibrant, others are once again “found”, and some on the rejuvenation rise.  Some were built questionably in design and ultimately were lacking in egress and safety features, some succumbed to fire, some were closed due to occupancy and safety codes that evolved, and some deteriorated over time.  Whether utilized today, standing neglected, or gone from the landscape, Opera Houses made a mark in the USA.
A bit more easy history of the Avon area.                                               .                                                                                                                                                     .
⇒ Hike time is slated as 3:30PM starting on the Erie-Attica Trail in Avon (at the trail’s trail-head adjacent the parking lot off Farmers Rd) and progressing to the connecting Genesee Valley Greenway (GVG) trail.    For those unaware the GVG is now a NYS Park (a linear park).    – – – Foliage colors of deciduous trees may be prime at time of this hike.
*If you look great in Autumnal Orange (or blaze orange), and even if maybe you’re thinking you don’t, well, … this hike is during Bow Hunting Season for big game, so wearing some of that orange would place you right in fashion this time of year.  **No need for underfoot Traction Devises (TDs) on this hike, perhaps excepting if you see yourself scrambling off the trail on slopes in pursuit of a geocache. The GVG being a former canal (& later a railroad), and the Erie-Attica Trail being a former railroad bed, means the terrain of the GVG trail is basically/nearly flat.
 ——————————————————————————————————————-
2:00PM Program location : { GPS coordinates   42.911679, -77.746302 }
In the 1876 Opera Block located at 23 Genesee St, Avon (in 2nd floor meeting room).  For those familiar with the traffic circle in Avon, Genesee Street is directly off the west side of the circle and runs in ssw direction therefrom, and the Opera Block is in the first block of Genesee St.  Avon town offices are also located at 23 Genesee St (point of reference), while the Village of Avon offices are located a bit further down at 74 Genesee St.
←→ Directions:  From I-390 exit #10 (exit for Avon & Lima, Rts 5&20 exit), head west toward Avon on Rts 5&20.  Passing thru the hamlet of East Avon (where you’ll cross NYS Rt 15) and continuing into the Village of Avon, passing the iconic Tom Wahl’s restaurant on the left and opposite Tops Plaza on the right at the eastern side of the Village of Avon.  Still continuing on Rts 5&20 at this point aka East Main St, eventually you’ll reach the ‘traffic circle’ in the center of the Village of Avon.  Round the traffic circle (which contains a village park in the center by-the-way) just more than halfway around, and you’ve arrived at Genesee St which runs ssw off the traffic circle, and the 1876 Opera Block at 23 Genesee Street will be evident. (hint: look for large lettering on the building, “Opera Block 1876” “Town of Avon” and on the building nextdoor to it “State Bank of Avon”)  Parking may be at a premium immediately adjacent the Opera Block, if many folks attend the program.  Some folks may need to park a short walk away.
3:30PM Hike meet location / trailhead : { GPS coordinates  42.922804, -77.756293 }
←→ Directions:  Less than a 2 minute drive from 1876 Opera Block to intersection of Rt 5&20 & Farmers Rd.  From Genesee St, round the traffic circle (in a contorted sort of manner) a bit shy of 360o, … ,and head west on Rts 5&20 aka at this point West Main Street.    [Historic note: From the traffic circle, as you nearly immediately pass Rochester St & then Railroad St (both on the right), you may wish to take note, this is where the Erie RR Attica spurline branched from the larger Erie RR trackage running from Rochester to Mt Morris and other locales.]  Continuing a short distance on Rts 5&20 to Farmers Rd (on the right) which runs north off Routes 5&20 immediately east of the Genesee River. (The Genesee River forms the western border of the Town of Avon and the Village of Avon.) The Erie-Attica Trail parking lot is off Farmers Rd.  (Farmers Rd is partially paved and part gravel surface.)   To reach the parking lot, drive on Farmers Rd until you pass under the flyover for the former RR truss bridge (now the Erie-Attica Trail truss bridge), and make an immediate right turn into the very ample sized parking lot.   From the parking lot, Erie-Attica Trail paved trail section extends a very short distance eastward to Horseshoe Blvd, majority of trail length is west of the parking lot and is unpaved, and immediately crosses the Genesee River on the former Erie RR truss bridge as it heads westward to jct with the Genesee Valley Greenway (GVG) which is now a NYS Park (linear park).
{You’ll note directions are variably given by: landmark, direction, compass orientation, and GPS coordinates.  Something for everyone.}   Here are some links, about the Erie-Attica Trail. —>
                                 .                                                                                                                          .
⇒ Trails, & Hike Groups:
On the hike route, the vast majority of the Erie-Attica Trail (mostly stone dust surface) lies in the TOWN OF CALEDONIA, just over the truss bridge which spans approx 220 feet in length as it provides access across the Genesee River.  The Genesee River is the border between two Livingston County towns, Avon (Town & Village) on the east bank of the river & the Town of Caledonia on the west bank of the river.  The Erie-Attica Trail connection with the GVG trail also lies in the Town of Caledonia.
The GVG portion of this hike (mixed surface of grass, dirt / fine gravel / very fine cinder / coal dust) south of the Erie-Attica Trail (actually south of US Rt 20, which spits from Rt 5&20 just west of Avon) is substantially represented in hike #5 in “Wegman’s Passport to family wellness” Program booklet for the GVG State Park.
For those hikers who wish to do a W Passport booklet “rubbing”, the group or individuals will need a pencil or crayon in addition to their own Passport booklet.
For hikers’ general  knowledge, the “Wegmans Passport to family wellness  Program booklet” for the GVG consists a total of 14 listed hikes on the GVG. The Wegman’s “Passport to family wellness – Genesee Valley Greenway State Park” booklets are available (free) at select Wegman’s locations (likely W store locations closeby to the GVG) at the store’s service desk.  (You may want to call first, if it would mean a special trip for you. Wegman’s Chili-Paul location in the Town of Chili, does have them currently.)  Picking one up (and maybe several for fellow hikers) on your own assures that you have one in hand.  A limited number of these “Passport to family wellness” GVG booklets will be available at the hike.  Of note, S/T has three hikes on the GVG this autumn hiking season, 10/18, 11/1. & 11/8.
Completion of hikes in this booklet makes the trail user eligible for Wegmans grocery coupons or a NYS Parks Empire Passport.  See details —>
{approx excerpt from the GVG website} The GVG State Park Passports are available at the following locations (when they have them):  Wegmans stores in Rochester, Geneseo, and Hornell; the Letchworth State Park Administration Building; the Mt. Morris Dam Visitor Center; and the Livingston County Chamber of Commerce Tourist Information Office.  Please note that you need to ask for the passport at each of these locations (read, they may not be out on open display, but are available if you ask).  Passports are also available from FOGVG Board Members.                            .                                                                                                                                                                                                                    .
***Toward establishing future S/T hike & Genesee River paddle event possibilities in and near Avon, … S/T kayakers may want to take time to assess the “Genesee River access point” at the NYSDEC fishing access area at the southeast corner of Rts 5&20 and the Genesee River.  This is approximately opposite the Rts 5&20 and Farmers Rd intersection. (The locale is sometimes referred to as Berry’s Park, and you’ll find a blue and gold NYS Education Dept historic marker there titled “Berry’s Tavern”.)***
Hike Planner’s option #1- – –
This hike is suitable to accommodate Springwater Trails – Climbers, Tourists, Naturalists, and Flatlanders. There is a flat short paved trail segment of the Erie-Attica Trail, and most of the rest of the trail is relatively flat as it is a former railroad bed, so this hike is suitable for mobility limited hikers.  The connecting GVG, also being a former railroad bed is relatively flat.  Respective hiking groups will be coalesced based on abilities and interests of hikers at this hike.   Hike Leaders will gauge time of their respective hike group for return to the hike start point at approximately 5:30PM.  Being that the trails utilized for this hike are well established trails, Hike Leaders will well be able to lead with no pre-hike required prior to hike day.
The hike routing is basically an “out and back type hike”, so if a group were to continuously hike the trail “out” from start point at 3:30PM, at the one hour point (4:30PM) the group would then reverse direction and hike “back” therefore arriving at the trailhead (start/end locale) at approx 5:30PM.  Hike Groups choosing to not keep a continuous pace, and instead injecting some ‘sploring and stationary observing into the hike will need to better gauge time for return than continuous pace hikers.
~5:45PM After-hike Social (optional) — Tom Wahl’s Restaurant, 283 East Main St in Avon {weather dependent: inside, outside, or outside under the picnic pavilion} is a quintessential venue for a quality meal at reasonable prices. {menu here} telephone 226-2420  Suitable as Plan A or as Plan B for an after-hike social.  The outdoor pavilion lights are on during nighttime restaurant hours of operation  In keeping with the multifaceted nature of this hike event, so too will the after-hike social be multifaceted.  With History of yesteryear (Opera Block, and the Erie RR Attica spur line now turned rail-to-trail) in mind, and with Harvest season bounty upon us, we will: -(*1)- Converge at the iconic Tom Wahl’s Restaurant picnic pavilion behind the restaurant. Tom Wahl’s Restaurant long standing reputation of uncompromising quality food at reasonable prices offers Ground Rounds (don’t call it a hamburger, please), “plates”, wraps, sandwiches, salads, soup, chili, and more (menu).   And, some discount coupons are available in various newspapers & one here.
-(*2)- In addition to restaurant food purchases if you would like to bring a favorite dish-to-pass among S/T hikers, in recognition of Autumn Bounty, we can do this at the picnic pavilion.  No time or thoughts to make a dish-to-pass?, well, …no worries or hurries we’re at Tom Wahl’s.
-(*3)-  And being Harvest season, hikers who find themselves with an abundance of produce are welcome to bring it for gifting or exchanging with other hikers. (No full blown Farmer’s Market here folks, just a simple sharing if you’ve a bounty, be it grown by you or a neighbor, or be it that peck or bushel of produce that was such a good deal at a farmers market but you’ll probably not use before some were to go to waste.  No over abundance of bountiful harvest?, well, … no problem (its just an option).   – – – So, you can see that old-fashioned (historic) sharing of autumnal harvest bounty with your neighbors and friends is woven in here.  Bushel or peck of apples, tomatoes, squash, pears, peppers, etc?, and wondering if you’ll use them all? – No problem, share your good fortune.
Sunset on this date is 6:23PM with twilight ~ 30-60 minutes or so thereafter.
If you decide as result of this hike on the GVG, a former canal, you thirst for more exposure on the former canal, well, … there is an event of The Canal Society of NYS which this year centers on the former Genesee Valley Canal (specifically the southern section).   – – -This October also brings an very unique opportunity in Western NY for hikers and historic canal appreciators.  The 2015 October Fall Field Trip of the Canal Society of NYS (website  www.newyorkcanals.org ) is focusing on the former Genesee Valley Canal, and more specifically the southern portion.  The Fall Field Trip scheduled for October 23&24, 2015, is based out of Mt Morris, NY, with multiple visits to substantial parts of the former Genesee Valley Canal.  Sound interesting?  The details can be found through one of the two above hyperlinks provided, or click ⇒ October 2015 Field Trip schedule details.
— Some Hike Planners notes, for possible use when developing this Avon hike. —
⇒ ~5:45PM After-hike Social – (for use in developing the Hike Plan)  — Hike Planner options:  1) Tom Wahl’s Restaurant, 283 East Main St in Avon {weather dependent: inside, outside, or outside under the picnic pavilion} is a quintessential venue for a quality meal on the lower end of the price scale yet with attention to quality {menu here}, telephone 226-2420  Suitable as Plan A or as Plan B for an after-hike social.  The outdoor pavilion lights are on during nighttime restaurant hours of operation.  ; 2) pot-luck held at the 3rd floor of the Opera Block if permission can be gained ; 3) pot-luck held at Avon Driving Park (aka “the Downs” by locals) at the end of Spring St (a park aptly named for the horse racing track of former glory days, of note the track is still present albeit minimally used)   { 42.906791, -77.766153  } , both the (closely situate) north and south picnic pavilions have lighting and receptacles (you’ll need an extension cord to utilize the receptacles) & likely there are parking lot lights.  There are plenty of picnic tables, and grills too.  Water spigot located near the picnic pavilions.  ; 4)  Avon Inn at 55 East Main St {fancier than the norm for a social, would need to check on required attire, not sure hiking attire would be acceptable} 226-8181, but closed on Sunday evenings unless a change occurs;  5)  “Village Restaurant” (aka “the VR”, by locals) at 13 Genesee St , phone (585)-226-6333, is NOT an option as hours are 5AM ’til 2 or 3PM daily & Friday dinner ;  6)  The Avondale Pub, 37 Genesee St. , phone (585)-266-9319 ; 7) Fat Sam’s Bar & Grill at 58 West Main St., phone (585)- 226-2744 ; 8) Concessions and Arcade building, menu, at Vintage Drive-In located at 1520 West Henrietta Rd, Avon/East Avon (with possibility of staying for a movie for those interested), unless the Drive-In has closed for the season.  9) Peppermints Restaurant, 244 East Main Street, phone (585)-226-2707 open ’til 10PM on Sunday ;  10) Woody’s II Ice Cream Parlor at 43 Genesee St, phone (585)-226-3408.
Note: if choosing an outside venue, especially one not having a pavilion, having a Plan B of an inside venue option would be a good thing in case weather is not optimal for an outside social.
Gleaned from the Victor Hiking Trails (VHT) Website & page 4 of the VHT Pathfinder- Fall 2015 newsletter, Vol 20 issue 3, pages 2&4,  the December VHT hike is as listed above.
VHT guided hikes are scheduled the 2nd Saturday of most every month, as is the above hike.  Hikes are open to all, no membership or fee required to participate.  This hike locale has been a popular locale with S/T hikers, and is relatively close to some.  So, the hike is posted in view of possible participation of some S/T hikers.
