This Sunday you are invited to the Hopkins home for a summer hike around our valley!  The weather predicts a high of 90° with clouds and a possibility of rain – but let’s ignore that last bit. We are planning for three hikes, followed by an picnic by the pond social.  Please bring a dish to pass – we will provide a meat dish – maybe chicken fajitas. And if it is really hot, a quick dip in the pond will cool you off!

The Naturalists have requested a walk with a longer view.  Then will head up around our field.  At the top, they can see the length of the valley and even catch a glimpse if the wind turbines across the Cohocton valley. From there, they will follow our country lane around a pine woods and out to another field of daisies next to a Red Pine woods planted almost 100 years ago. They will continue to the other end of the property to our largest White Pine tree.  This tree was at the edge of the farm from the 40’s, but now is snug within a natural White Pine woods and a hand planted Norway Spruce woods.

The Tourists will cross the creek (this creek drains the valley into the Cohocton Creek, which becomes a river on the way to Bath and ends up in the Chesapeake Bay), and then follow the valley along several pine forests planted back in the 50’s. Most of this walk will be in the forest shade protected from the heat.

The Climbers will head across the valley and up to the top of the hill.  From there we will go parallel to the Tourist’s route, then head down the hill to return on the same path as the Tourists. The top of the hill will be in the sunshine, but if it is too hot, we can always slip down into the woods and make our way in the shade.
