Loon Lake Paddle or Mill Creek Nature Conservancy Hike

This Sunday’s hike will entail a hike at Mill Creek Nature Preserve OR a kayak on Loon Lake which is located about 5 miles south of the Village of Wayland. Mill Creek is owned and managed by the Genesee Valley Conservancy. http://www.geneseevalleyconservancy.org Mill Creek comprise 43 acres of forest and has 2 creeks that come together, and support naturalized brown trout as well as native brook trout.  Efforts are underway to control invasive species and plant native trees and shrubs including ash trees that are being lost to the emerald ash borer.

Loon Lake is a small mountain lake about 3 miles in circumference dotted with small cottages where both locals and seasonal people reside. Loon Lake has no public access but has a small restaurant called “Laf A Lot” that allow kayak launching (with permission).

Meeting: To start the hike/kayak, we will meet at 3:45pm in the parking lot at “Laf A Lot”, where sign in and briefing will be done. Kayakers will launch next to the restaurant while hikers will travel back to Mill Creek for the hike.

After Hike Social: After the hike/paddle, we will plan on eating dinner at “Laf A Lot.”  https://www.restaurantji.com/ny/wayland/laf-a-lot-/  Note, while not required, “laughing out loud’ is highly encouraged.

Hiking recommendations: Bug spray, hats and long pants are recommended as the trail is only periodically maintained.

Directions:

People coming from the east, Naple’s direction should follow Route 21s to Wayland. At the first red light, turn left and follow Route 21S for 5 miles, pass Mill Creek Nature Preserve and continue to County Rd 92 and turn left. In 1/2 mile on Route 92 turn right onto “Laf A Lot” road. The restaurant is about 500ft down the road on the left.

People coming from the north, Hemlock Honeoye direction follow route 15A to Wayland. At the first red light, continue straight on and follow Route 21S for 5 miles, pass Mill Creek Nature Preserve and continue to County Rd 92 and turn left. In 1/2 mile on Route 92 turn right onto “Laf A Lot” road. The restaurant is about 500ft down the road on the left.

People coming from Rochester that come down on I-390 exit at the Wayland exit and turn right onto Route 21S for 3.5 miles, pass Mill Creek Preserve and continue to County Rd 92 and turn left. In 1/2 mile on Route 92 turn right onto “Laf A Lot” road. The restaurant is about 500ft down the road on the left.
